What is an upsell?
For those of you who don’t know what an upsell is, it is when someone buys something then you suggest them other products to buy also. When you go to McDonald’s and you buy a burger, for example, they are going to ask you if you want to add fries with that. That is an upsell – after they buy something, you offer them something else. That is a really good way to increase your average order value. That is a really good way to make more money with your e-commerce store. You need upsells. That is one of the mistakes that other sellers are doing. They don’t have upsells.
Tip #1 – Upsell should be related to what was bought
When it comes to upsells, the number one thing that you have to remember is that what you’re upselling to the client should be congruent to what they just bought. Let’s say someone just bought a pair of shoes on your website, your upsell should not be something related to electronics like an iPhone charger because it is not related to what they bought. The chances that this person is going to buy your upsell (iPhone charger) are pretty low. Some people may buy it but most of them are not going to buy it. So in our example, maybe a good upsell is another pair of shoes, a pair of socks or a t-shirt. Something related to clothing would be great.
The more congruent the upsell is to what the person just bought, on average, the more that you’re going to be successful with your upsells. I’ve tested this massively so you can trust me on this. You can try it for yourself but you’re going to see that what I’m saying is true.
Tip #2 – Use a really good app
The second thing you have to know about upselling is that there are a lot of apps out there that are not real upselling apps. For example, if your app suggests similar products to what the person added to his cart before he actually buys it, then your app is not really an upselling app. It is more of a cross-selling app. You can also have that kind of app in your store but that’s not a real upsell app.
A real upsell app is an app that suggests another product after the client fills out all of the required information and buys the product he added to his cart. What I use is called OneClickUpsell. I really love this app that’s why I use it in all of my stores. I highly recommend everybody to use that app. In my opinion, that’s the best legit app for upselling. There are other apps that you can use but what I suggest is OnceClickUpsell. It works really great and it lets you create multiple upsells. I think the sweet spot is having 2 upsells. Tip #3 – Test, test, test!!!
The third thing that you need to be aware of when it comes to upselling is that you should test everything. Don’t just create one upsell and hope that it sells. It’s the same process as creating Facebook ads. You want to spilt test everything, you want to know what works best and you should have a mindset of testing everything. Remember that I only recommend two upsells because if you have more than two, some people are going to get annoyed. Let’s say you’re selling a pair of shoes, and then you upsell another pair of shoes. If after a while, you see that you don’t sell that much, then you just need to test another product. At some point, you’re going to find something or a product that works super well with what you just sold. Don’t assume anything but make sure to test everything until you get the right combination of your upsell and main product.
As a recap, when doing upselling, you have to consider three things – the upsell should be congruent with the product that your client bought, use a really good app, and make sure to test everything until you find the perfect combination of products.
