Precise targeting vs broad targeting
Should you go precise or broad when you are building your audiences in Facebook? The answer to that is that it depends of your pixel. If you just started your store and you have a brand new pixel, then you should go as precise as possible!
The Facebook pixel is basically a code that helps Facebook track EVERYTHING that is going on on your website. They have a very powerful algorithm that let them know what kind of people go on your website, what kind of people buy on your website, and to whom they should show your ads in order to make the most sales. now what you have to know is this : The pixel need data in order to become smart and work properly.
Don’t expect that with a brand new pixel, Facebook will show your ads to the right people without you targeting super precise keywords. IT WON’T HAPPEN.
When you are just starting out with a new pixel, you need to go AS PRECISE AS POSSIBLE! I recommend you to build audiences that are minimum 75 000 and maximum 500 000 people in terms of size.
I’m going to give you an example. Let’s say that you are selling cat products….So your market is the cats lovers. You can’t just target the keyword ¨ cats ¨ and build an audience with it because the audience will be WAY TOO BIG.
Just take a look at what happens when I do it:
As you can see on the right side, the potential reach is 47 million people! Of course, you can only target women, and adjust the age, and this will reduce the potential reach….But it will probably be WAY TOO BIG for an audience for a brand new store and a brand new pixel.
Remember, I recommend you to build audiences around 75k to 500k. In order to do this, you will have to target long tail keywords, or in other words, more precise keywords that will target more passionate potential buyers. Let me show you an example:
In this example above, I added a few cat magazines out there (There are probably more and I would need to add them). When you build your audiences for a new store with a new pixel, you want to build audiences that will represent all of your market. I created a video explaining step-by-step how to do it. Basically, you want to create a bunch of audiences between 75k to 500k that represents all the segments of your total market. It could be all the magazines, all the websites, all the fan pages, etc etc. Again, to know exactly how to do this, CLICK HERE.
Now as you can see in the picture above, the potential reach is 180 000, which is perfect because it is between 75k to 500 000k!
This is what we call precise targeting because we target PRECISE KEYWORDS and we target SUPER PASSIONATE PEOPLE INSIDE OF OUR NICHE. People that subscribed and are interested in cat magazines are not just regular cat lovers…They are SUPER PASSIONATE ABOUT CATS. Think about it this way : If you are not able to sell your products to these super passionate people about cats, how are you going to sell them to the less passionate people?
This is why you want to start as precise as possible (Bigger than 75k, though). You want to show your ads to the super passionate people first. You want to spend as less money as possible and show your ads to only the people that are the most likely to buy your products.
Now when your pixel is smarter and you’ve made a bunch of sales, you can go broader and you won’t have any problems because the Facebook pixel will be smart at this point and it will know who exactly to show your ads to. But as a rule of thumb; with a new pixel and a new store, you want to go super precise.
