Do you hate selling? Don’t worry, you are not the only one! I used to HATE SELLING also! In this post I’m going to share with you how knowing how to sell is probably the #1 skill you need in e-commerce and in life in general if you want to be successful!

You Hate Selling But Want To Me An Online Marketer?

You hate selling? My first question to you would be : Why? You’re not in front of me, so you’re not going to be able to answer… But I want you to answer in your mind, and I’m going to read your mind right now. I don’t know you but I’m 100% sure that you don’t like selling because you associate selling with something negative.

You probably associate selling with door to door sales where they knock at your door and they’re trying to sell you a vacuum that you don’t need…but the person is so good at sales that you end up buying their vacuum for $1000…

This is probably how you see selling, as something not ethical, something negative.

If I thought about selling that way, I would hate selling also…

But the reality is that selling is the greatest thing on earth, because selling is nothing more than influencing other people. I want you think about selling as influencing other people or yourself.

Sales equals influence, and influence can be bad or good… it all depends what the person using it is trying to do!

Mother Teresa was a super influential person because she knew how to sell her ideas to other people. Mother Teresa was a great saleswoman.

 She was amazing at sales, because selling equals influencing. She was amazing at spreading her message and at influencing other people.

Same thing with Gandhi. Gandhi was a salesman. He was great at influencing other people to do stuff. He was great at communicating his idea and making sure that people believe him and they like him and they trust what he’s saying.

Gandhi, Mother Teresa, these are positive role models, right? And in the end, these people were salespeople.

At some point in my life I was working in a call center and we were selling a monthly subscription for the Red Cross, UNICEF, and stuff like that.

We were calling people for them to give us money monthly. UNICEF is a nonprofit organization that raised money for dying children in extreme poverty all around the world. We were basically calling people to ask them for money.

I remember at some point during the training they gave us a sales script and they told us “Use that sales script and if you’re good, you’re going to sell two subscriptions per day. If you do two per day, you’re amazing”.

After two weeks I was selling 10 to 12 monthly donations per day… 

At that point I had read at least 50 books on how to sell, copyrighting, etc etc, so I modified the sales script a little bit in a way that I knew would sell way more, because the original script was junk to be honest.

After two weeks, the supervisor said to me, “Max, I need to talk to you”. He said to me, “Look, you’re selling a lot and everything, but we don’t like selling here. I heard a few of your calls and when someone says that he’s not interested, you try to deal with the objection, and you try to reframe what they think in another way and everything.”

I was like, “Yeah, yeah, that’s what I do, that’s why I sell a lot.”

The director was like, “Yeah, but we don’t like to do that here. We don’t like to put pressure on other people. What you do is more like selling, we just ask other people. It’s a non-charity organization here. We just like to ask people for money, and if they don’t want to, we just ask once and that’s it.”

In my mind I was like, “Are you dumb? Are you $%# dumb?” I think I told him actually because I got fired like 10 minutes after.

We’re raising money for children that are dying literally around the world. When I’m calling someone and the person says, “No, I’m not interested.” And I’m like, “Yeah, I understand that you’re not interested at first, obviously I’m asking for like $30 per month. It seems like a big amount of money,  But when you think about it’s $1 per day really, it’s less than a coffee per day. The reason why I’m asking is blah, blah, blah”, I’M DOING EXACTLY WHAT EVERY OTHER PERSON IN THAT ORGANIZATION SHOULD HAVE DONE. I was selling, I was influencing the other person!

I was helping way more UNICEF than the other workers in there, and I was able to do that because I knew how to sell. I knew how to influence other people.

I remember as I was getting fired I was thinking : ¨Wait a minute, this person is in charge of raising money for children that are literally dying all around the world, and because that person sees selling as something negative, a lot of children are dying everyday¨.

Let me give you another example…

Let’s say that your new goal is to go to the gym five times per week. Then it is Monday morning and you’re like, uh, I should go to the gym, but I don’t feel like it…

Look, are you going to be able to sell yourself the idea to go to the gym? Are you going to be able to influence yourself to go to the gym? Yes or no. Are you good enough in sales to influence yourself to go to the gym, yes or no. It’s not just about influencing other people, it’s about influencing yourself also.

If you’re good in sales, if you’re good at influencing other people, you’re going to be able to sell yourself also. You’re going to be able to be disciplined.

 Influencing other people aka selling, is the greatest thing on earth. If one of your parents is smoking and you don’t know how to sell, you don’t know how to make them to stop smoking… They’re going to die and it’s your fault. It’s literally your fault because if you learned how to sell, chances are high you could influence them in a way that could make them quit!

I don’t care if you go to Harvard Business School… I’ve met plenty of MBAs in my life and I hired quite a few of them, and let me tell you something…

Some of them are completely useless because they don’t know how to sell. If you don’t know how to influence other people, how are you going to be able to lead an organization? How are you going to be able to sell the vision to all of the employees? How are you going to be able to do partnerships with banks, with other businesses?

How are you going to be able to sell the idea that your products are the best? They don’t teach that in business school, and I know that because I went to business school…

It was a waste of money, to be honest. I learned more by going to the local library, reading biographies about successful businessmen than in business school.

 Anyways, if you want to do online marketing the first thing you need to do is this: stop seeing selling as something bad. Selling equals influencing other people and that’s amazing. Mother Teresa was a great saleswoman. Gandhi was a great salesman. Period.

Online marketing is nothing more than selling stuff on the internet. Physical products, digital products, services, etc. When you do online marketing, you’re basically a salesperson on the Internet, so I highly recommend everybody who wants to become good at this to read a lot of books about selling & how to influence other people!
