Should you do e-mail marketing for your Shopify store
I want you to think about it this way. For any business model out there, most of the time it’s much harder to acquire a new customer than to retain a customer. It’s much harder to acquire your customer. It costs you way more money to acquire a new customer than sell products and services to someone who already bought from you in the past.
When people are on your e-mail list, they are now you in your pipeline, in your sales funnel. You can sell them other stuff so you can make more money. You don’t need to acquire them anymore because they are already acquired. The trust is already there so it’s super easy to sell them products.
Mailchimp vs Aweber
When it comes to e-commerce, what I do in terms of e-mail marketing is super simple. I still use MailChimp because I think it works super great. For everything else in my business, I use Aweber. With MailChimp, when people add the product to their cart and they fill up their information such as their e-mail address, they are going to be added automatically to your email list.
That’s not the case with Aweber. If someone adds a product to their cart but at the end, they decided not to buy and click on exit, they’re not going to be added to your e-mail list. A lot of people do that. They enter their information but they end up not buying. Your goal is to add these people because you want your e-mail list to grow as big and as fast as possible.
MailChimp is super easy to use. You don’t need to be an expert to make beautiful emails. It has templates so you just have to drag and drop, and change the title.
Excuse #1: My e-mail will just go to the Spam folder.
One of the things that I hear people say about e-mail marketing is that they don’t do it because they think that their e-mails will just go in the Spam folder. That is not true!!
If you send high-quality content to the people on your list, they are most likely going to open your e-mails and click on it. If people open it once and they don’t see value in what you’re offering them, they will keep on ignoring your e-mails. Yes, maybe at some point, your e-mail will end up in the Spam folder. Even if that happens, just continue sending e-mails to people on your list.
I’m using Gmail for my e-mails. Every time I receive a new e-mail, I receive a notification and I see the title. Sometimes, I still click and open the e-mail even if I know it goes to my Spam folder. It’s the same for other people. Some of them are going to click and some of them are going to buy. Don’t freak out if your e-mails end up in the Spam folder. That is not an excuse to make use of e-mail marketing.
Excuse #2: I don’t want to annoy people.
Another excuse that I hear from people is that they don’t want to annoy people. What are you talking about?? E-mails are great. If people are not interested in your e-mail, they will not open it or they are going to open it and click on unsubscribe. That’s the worst that can happen.
Remember, people are on your e-mail list because they added a product to their cart or they bought one of your products. Obviously, they were interested in what you were offering them. Chances are high that they are going to be interested in what you are going to offer them in the future. Don’t be scared of what people are going to think. You are missing out big time if you are not sending e-mails.
Excuse #3: It takes too much time to send e-mails.
Another thing that people tell me is that it takes too much time to send e-mails. I think that is the funniest excuse because it doesn’t really take a lot of time. Compared to doing Facebook ads, it is probably the same amount of time but you only do it once and you can already schedule all your e-mails in advance. I just consume 2-3 hours of my time in creating e-mails.
What I like to do is I schedule all my e-mails 1 month in advance. Let’s say I want to send 2-3 e-mails per week – Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. I schedule all of them in advance for the whole month, and then MailChimp is going to send all of this e-mails automatically. It’s not time-consuming at all.
It is really really easy to do. It is mostly like free money because you don’t need to pay to acquire that customer. The trust is already established so it is easier to sell them more products. You are really missing out big time if you’re not doing e-mail marketing. You’re leaving money on the table big time. So I highly recommend you do it.
